• Digital Passport Photos: Prepare 2-inch white-background bareheaded color digital photos taken within the last 6 months,for use in university registration.
2. Academic Prep
• Pre-Arrival Online Courses: Access our pre-departure orientation to learn about Chinese classroom culture and academic expectations.
• Language Basics: Enroll in a free 2-week Mandarin survival phrase course to build confidence for daily life.
• Course Registration: Complete your initial course selection via the university portal before arrival.
3. Logistics & Finances
• Flights & Accommodation: Book your arrival flight to align with the university’s orientation dates; confirm your on-campus or off-campus housing.
• Payment Methods: Apply for a Chinese bank card upon arrival, and prepare a UnionPay card or international credit card for initial expenses.
• Insurance: Purchase international travel insurance that covers medical expenses in China, or enroll in the university’s student insurance plan.
4. Luggage Preparation
• Travel Essentials: Pack a carry-on bag with your passport, passport photos,visa, admission letter, and a small amount of cash (RMB) for immediate use upon arrival.
Keep these documents separate from your checked luggage.
• Clothing: Check the climate of your study city first—bring lightweight, breathable clothes for southern China and warm layers (down jacket, sweater) for northern
China.Include formal attire for academic events or interviews.
• Daily Necessities: Bring personal toiletries (toothbrush, skincare products) and prescription medications (with English labels and a doctor’s note for
customs inspection). Electrical adapters (Type A, Type C, Type I are used in China) are a must-have.
• Study Supplies: Pack a laptop, notebook, stationery, and a portable charger. You can buy most study materials locally after arrival.
• Prohibited Items: Avoid carrying fresh food, plants, or unregistered drugs. Refer to China Customs regulations for a complete list of restricted items.
After Your Arrival
1. First 7 Days
• Registration: Complete university registration and submit your original documents.
• Residence Permit: Apply for a Residence Permit at the local Public Security Bureau within 30 days of entry.
• Campus Orientation: Attend the mandatory international student orientation to meet peers, learn campus resources, and get your student ID.
2. Settle In
• SIM Card & Bank Account: Visit a local telecom store (China Mobile/Unicom/Telecom) to get a SIM card, then open a bank account with
your passport and residence permit.
• Transportation: Apply for a Public Transportation Card (e.g., Beijing Yikatong, Shanghai Public Transportation Card) for buses and subways.
• Life Essentials: Locate nearby supermarkets, hospitals, and international student support offices for daily needs.
