About Wenzhou University (WZU)

Wenzhou University is located in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province—a nationally renowned historical and cultural city and a pioneering region of China's reform and opening-up. With over 700,000 Wenzhouese emigrants spread across the world, the city is endowed with a natural spirit of inclusiveness and a global outlook. As the only comprehensive university in southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian, and eastern Jiangxi, and a key university in Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou University upholds the motto "Seek truth from facts and dare to be the first." Resonating with the "millennium-old commercial port and capital of the private economy," the university is writing a new chapter of innovation and openness in education.

The university's comprehensive strength has been steadily improving. In the 2025 Times Higher Education Rankings, it ranked 60th–70th in Chinese mainland, 41st in the comprehensive ranking of global universities in Chinese mainland, and 54th in the QS World University Rankings in Chinese mainland. Five disciplines—Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Computer Science, and Environmental Science & Ecology—have entered the top 1% of the ESI global rankings.

Since being authorized to enroll international students in 1997, the university has adhered to its educational philosophy: "Attract outstanding talents from around the world to cultivate global Wenzhou experts; integrate Wenzhou University's talents into the world to empower Wenzhou's global connections." It is committed to nurturing internationally-minded individuals who understand and are friendly to China and are well-versed in both Chinese and Western cultures. To date, the university has trained over 13,000 international students from all over the world, with nearly 1,000 currently enrolled, representing more than 70 countries. In 2014, the university was approved by the Ministry of Education as a host institution for the Chinese Government Scholarship. In 2025, it received a B-level certification (the highest level for initial certification) in the Quality Certification for International Student Education.

The university focuses on three distinctive areas: innovation and entrepreneurship education, overseas Chinese education, and teacher education. It has established internship and practice bases with leading industry enterprises, providing international students with professional support to connect with the Chinese job market and integrate into global development. The university has co-established two "Silk Road Institutes" with Tsingshan Group (Indonesia) and the University of Siena (Italy). It also regularly organizes cultural activities such as the "Belt and Road Silk Road Culture Festival," "Experience China," and "WZU East Journey," offering international students a broad platform for cultural exchange and practice.
